Recently, at "Raver Summer Camp," I taught a little Electronic Dance Music class. Some people have been asking me for some of my references and materials for the class, so I've compiled a nice handy little list.
History and Overview of Electronic Music
EDM Genres
A Chronological guide with samples of styles
There's a few books like: Rave Culture, an insider's overview
Rave America: New School Dancescapes
Generation Ecstacy
Altered State, etc...
And there are movies like:
Better Living Through Circuitry
Modulations: Cinema for the Ear
Intellect: Techno House Progressive
Let's not forget magazines like Lotus, Fix, XLR8R, MixMag, DJMag, etc... My favorite right now is Grooves because of its focus on IDM.
Oh. and I spoke about influential drum machines and synths. The 808, 909 and 303 mostly... and certain drum breaks that were used in early jungle like the Amen Brother and Funky Drummer.
That's pretty much it. I had an hour so I just kind of jammed through a lot of information very quickly.

Electronic Music 101
good stuff man, it's good to inform, most folks i run into nowadays have no clue what a 909 is, don't know the difference between minimal techno, funky house, or melodic trance, hehe...
i like ishkur's edm guide a lot:

~ love is the greatest...
Thanks!
That Amen page is great! Actually my link that referred to the Chronological listing of genres with samples is the Old Ishkur's Guide because it looks like the one linked from Ishkur's site is just a teaser for the insane upcoming v3.0
Here's a tip. Find Nuskool Breaks and hit the "stop button" after playing some of the sound samples. There's a little stealthy suprise waiting =D
